Why is cancer so painful?
Cancer may involve acute and/or chronic pain from a variety of sources:
Tumor growth, including invasion of surrounding tissues or metastasis to distant organs
Therapeutic interventions
Surgery may bring acute pain and/or chronic pain that lasts long after the procedure
Chemotherapy may cause neuropathic pain, mucositis, and bone marrow suppression
Radiation may cause localized burns, inflammation, and late tissue fibrosis
Anxiety, worry, and fatigue may exacerbate the pain experience
Dr. Cara cares for pain holistically using a combination of pharmacological interventions, physical therapies, and compassionate counseling to bring meaningful comfort during this difficult journey.

Health Coaching
Dr. Cara understands that patients often feel confused and alienated by rushed, fragmented healthcare. Throughout his career, his friends, family, and patients have turned to him for help well beyond his typical scope of pain care, asking for his support in optimizing wellness, navigating disease, interpreting tests results, and understanding treatment options. He decided to offer this support to his broader patient population as a form of coaching, which gives patients the same type of comfort as having a doctor in the family.
As a health coach, Dr. Cara draws on his medical training as well as his experience as an educator. He takes his time, listens, and provides meaningful insights and plans to guide patients on their health journey, including:
• Interpretation of test results
• Explanation of disease processes
• Exploration of treatment options
• Sleep hygiene planning
• Nutritional guidance
• Exercise and physical therapy plans
